Bird by Bird, p.43-93

#1 "if you're lucky, your characters may become impatient with your inability, while writing dialogue, to keep up with all they have to say" (P.67) I really liked this quote because to me it just represents how rounded your characters can become that the story will come naturally, and they will feel slowed down by you and how fast you can type. Good characters can really make or break a story and I feel like that fact is emphasized in this chapter. Having fully developed characters where you know their beliefs, desires, fears, goals, etc is very important to have a well-rounded story. Even modeling characters off real people can prove to help develop writing skills to one day be able to have this effect with your characters. One of the parts that I enjoy the most about writing is character development, which is why this quote stood out to me! I hope one day my characters are so much like real people that they don't need me to think so hard to tell the story, they...

Bird by Bird, p.1-43

"Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. you can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole journey that way" (page 18). I picked this quote because one of my personal struggles with writing is not being able to micromanage it because I am a very type-A person. I can't outline a story and plan every single little detail and plot point like I could in a more academic piece of writing. I just liked it because it reminded me that writing doesn't have to be perfect and writing bad drafts is ok as she goes on to mention later in the reading. "The good news is that somedays it feels like you just have to keep getting out of your own way so that whatever it is that wants to be written down can use you to write it" (page 8) This one again relates back to my raging perfectionism because if I can map out how to do something perfectly, especially if it requires my precious free time, id rather not do it at all. I am the #1 person who gets i...

Visitation

Blog Journal 2:  *Knock knock* "Weird", Tom thought to himself. He had lived alone for a couple of months now, ever since his eldest daughter moved away to college. He didn't get any visitors ever, maybe it was a package he had forgotten he ordered? Tom turned the knob on the front door and was instantly greater by 5 larger than life men and dozens of cameras. "What is going on???" Tom asked the strangers. A man with long hair and a beard replied, "We are the Fab 5! Someone in your life signed you up to be a contestant on our show Queer Eye! We are here to makeover you and your stunning life"! Toms jaw dropped to the floor. Unknowingly, his daughter has signed him up to be a contestant on this reality show. They had already called his work and gotten him the week off and called those in his life to have his plans rescheduled. Toms next week was going to be spent having every aspect of his life turned upside down and on its head. Before he knew it,...

Bear at the Door

Blog Journal 1:  1) Meta has an interview for her dream job and she's sure to get it, her resume is incredible. One problem, when she gets there she realizes the interview is being held on the top floor of a skyscraper and she has a truly debilitating heights. What will Meta do? 2) Mari is applying to Ivy Leagues and double-checking her grades for this semester before they're finalized and she submits her applications. She sees her teacher made a genuine mistake in the grade book, bringing her grade to a C. But Mari has intense social anxiety, what will she do? 3) Holly's friends and she boated to a small island offshore on their favorite lake. Holly can't find them though and realizes they forgot her there, her phone is on the boat, and she doesn't know how to swim. What will she do? It was like any other summer day, Holly woke up to a text from her group chat asking if everyone was down for a beach day. Holly replied immediately and asked when they would ...

Animal Instinct

1: Long brown hair, with a slight curl pattern but not equally defined throughout her head. Brown eyes. Average height 5'5. A smaller head for the body and a square jawline. Wide eyes, a pointy upturned nose, average lips but with a very defined cupid's bow. A smaller forehead too, so her hair isn't styled into bangs. She has a more boxy body type, so her waist and hips are of a similar size. Most of her shape would come from her shorter and muscular legs. She is a normal weight and very toned. She wears sweaters a lot with either leggings or ripped jeans. She's an on the go and active girl so comfortable and effortless fashion is more up her alley. She sticks to a tried and true pair of black hightop converse. 2: Picture was drawn! I'll try to insert it soon 3: Well, I drew a wolf and a college-aged girl, and I imagined her to encounter the animal on a late-night walk home from the library. They're both afraid of each other, but the wolf presents itse...

A Letter From My Character

This is for the characters in my ten-minute play assignment since my first draft is short and not very good. Andrew writing a letter to Jamie, it's written on lined paper from one of his college notebooks. His penmanship is messier than normal, and there are a few tear stains smearing the pen. Hey Jamie, I'm writing this since you blocked me on basically everything. iMessage, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook... even from your VSCO??? I really miss you James. Listen, I know I've been an asshole, I should have come to my senses about you years ago. I feel like such an idiot and now I've lost you completely. Honestly, you have every right to hate me but I just really selfishly wish you wouldn't. Please talk to me. I really want to work this out, I hate myself for taking this long to realize it was you all along. What do I have to do to get you to see me? I miss you.
